Whenever it launches, Otherland will be a free-to-play title.( Play more Free MMORPGs, Free MMOs games ) Otherland review: DEVELOPER Hopefully it's all in the game when it's ready for launch, and the developer starts talking about its as-of-yet unrevealed features soon. From the sounds of it RealU is building quite a bit of content into Otherland, from competitive mini-games where you use UFOs to snatch cows in Lambda Mall to raid content, PvP arenas, an auction house and more. The chess pieces floating in the air aren't only for decoration either, they're some of Otherland's many dungeons, though their exact contents weren't being explicitly discussed. Getting between all these areas seems to be fairly easy with the help of a tube-like transit system that rapidly jets you from one spot to another. The environmental design can rapidly shift, switching from rolling green hills to bizarre patches of land populated with stacks of cubes. Hints of the virtual reality underpinnings are everywhere, from lines of binary code floating through the water to text encircling the sun. One questing area, Eight Squared, was shown off in a demo, where giant chess pieces float above a pastoral landscape. eDNA will also be used in customizing the layout and defenses of MyLand, a separate virutal space that serves as your home. No details on the crafting system are available yet, but hopefully RealU is doing something especially creative given the flexibility of Otherland's virtual reality space. Killed enemies drop loot, and more importantly eDNA, which can be used to augment a variety of things including character skills and crafted items. With guns, you'll need to aim and fire to hit enemies like you would in a third-person shooter. That means you'll need to switch to a precision weapon if you want to focus on one particular target. If you're running around with a giant glowing laser sword and swing it in a wide arc, you'll hit anything the blade contacts, not just whichever enemy you have targeted. Combat is meant to be a mix of action and traditional mechanics. In its current state, Otherland's interface allows for five skills to be slotted at a time, and lets you switch between three weapon types with the F1 – F3 keys. A back door leads to the Hacker Zone that sits underneath Lambda Mall, a dingy network of back alleys where you can buy black market gear, fight enemies and take part in Otherland's open PvP system. ![]() Inside the relatively ordinary building you'll be able to play pool, order drinks and interact with quest givers. In fact, the Pub is one of the first places you'll explore. The designs of each building vary significantly, from electric skyscrapers to the ordinary brick front of an English Pub. You'll wander past towering billboards and colorful storefronts to buy axes, laser rifles, and swords, as well as new armor to equip on your character. Most of Otherland's Lambda Mall is in place, though, which is a sprawling neon-lit virtual cityscape filled with item shops, NPCs going about their daily routines, mini-games and transit hubs. Many details about the game aren't available just yet – it's not clear whether switching classes negates all the experience gained with the one switched away from – and there are still more classes, zones and features to be revealed later on. ![]()
